Wayfaring Stranger

Traditional folk hymn, 1780s

2. I know dark clouds are going to gather around me,
I know my way'll be steep and rough;
But beauteous fields lie just beyond me,
Where God's redeemed their vigil keep.
I'm going there to see my loved ones,
Gone on before one by one,
I'm only going over Jordan,
I'm only going over home.

3. I'll soon be freed from earthly trial,
This body rest in old churchyard;
I'll drop this cross of self-denial,
And I'll go singing home to God.
I'm going there to meet my Saviour,
I'll dwell with him and never roam,
I'm only going over Jordan,
I'm only going over home.
